Community Mourns Loss of Chuck Furlow, Former AHS Athletic Director and ESPN 106.7 Host

By | ESPN 106.7 News | No Comments

The Auburn Network family and the entire Auburn/Opelika community is mourning the loss of Chuck Furlow, former Athletic Director at Auburn High School and co-host of The Drive with Bill Cameron on ESPN 106.7. Furlow passed away suddenly Monday evening. He was 72 years old.

“This is a very sad time for all of us,” said Mike Hubbard, President of Auburn Network, Inc., parent company of ESPN 106.7. “Chuck was one of the finest men I have ever known and was beloved by everyone here. We were blessed to have him as a part of our team where he shared his vast knowledge of sports and remarkable insights. It is hard to understand when someone as genuine and caring as Chuck is taken from us, but we trust God’s plan and pray that he will watch over and comfort Lynne and the Furlow family.”

Furlow, a native of Opelika, was a 1965 graduate of Opelika High School.  He was also a graduate of Auburn University.

Furlow’s career in athletic administration spanned nearly four decades. After starting out at Beulah in the 1970-71 school year, Furlow made stops at Opelika Junior High (1971-72), Lyman Ward (1973-75), Beauregard (1976-81), Auburn High (as a coach, 1981-84), Gardendale and the Jefferson County Schools central office (1994-98) before winding up at Auburn again. He retired from Auburn City Schools in July 2009.

During that time, he coached football, baseball, basketball and track, and served as athletic director at Lyman Ward, Beauregard (for two years) and Gardendale.

Furlow joined The Drive with Bill Cameron following his retirement and has been an integral part of the on-air team ever since. He also served as color analyst for Auburn High School football broadcasts and appeared on multiple ESPN 106.7 broadcasts.
