Auburn High Downs Area Foe Smiths Station

ahs-logo-smallThe Auburn High School baseball team knows what they need to do to make the 7A playoffs, and they are now one step closer after a 12-1 rout of Smiths Station on Wednesday night. Auburn High must win their area in order to make it to the AHSAA 7A baseball playoffs and after taking two out of three from Central-Phenix City back on April 5th and 6th, the Tigers must take two out of three from their other area foe Smiths Station to win the area.

The Tigers drew first blood in the bottom of the first with an RBI double by junior Garrett Morris, then he later scored on a Smiths Station error. Later in the inning Clay Golson hit a two run home run to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. After a couple of singles, junior Tanner Jones doubled in another run, then he was followed by a two RBI double by senior Rowdy Jordan pushed Auburn lead to 7-0. After another Smiths Station error allowed Jordan to score, an RBI single by Brooks Fuller gave Auburn a 9-0 lead (yes, still in the bottom of the first). Later in the inning, Golson hit his second home run of the inning to bring in three more runs giving the Tigers a 12-0 lead through just one inning.

Smiths Station got on the board in the top of the third thanks to a solo home run but fell victim to the ten run mercy rule as soon as it was effective after the fifth inning and the Tigers won 12-1.

Twelve runs was more than enough for Auburn ace Drew Jennings who earned the win for pitching all five innings allowing only one earned run on two hits and striking out four. Golson finished the game two for two with five RBI’s while Jordan finished one for three with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Thursday, the Tigers and Panthers will finish out the series with a double header in Smiths Station, where the Tigers hope to clinch a playoff berth. Scott Bagwell and Blake Ramsey will have coverage beginning at 6:00 CT on ESPN 106.7  following The Drive with Bill Cameron. The coverage will also be streaming online at or on the ESPN 106.7 app.
