Auburn Varsity Boys Lacrosse – McGinty Leads in win over Hoover

Auburn, AL – The Auburn Youth Lacrosse Varsity Varsity Boys team defeated Hoover Sunday afternoon at Duck Samford Stadium in Auburn. Defender Joey McGinty provided the Tigers with the spark on both ends of the field, spearheading a 9-7 come-from-behind win over Hoover.

McGinty was active on the defensive end of the field with five caused turnovers and four ground balls, and contributed three offensive assists to his defensive efforts. Late in the fourth quarter, with the game tied, McGinty made a steal, took the ball the length of the field and found Preston Cole, who scored the go-ahead goal to give the Tigers the lead for good. Cole ended up with four goals on the day, two of them courtesy of assists from McGinty.

Auburn attackman Ryan Torres tied the game midway through the fourth period before the McGinty-to-Cole connection put the Tigers on top with 3:36 remaining. Just 16 seconds later Auburn senior midfielder Coley Blythe sealed Hoover’s fate with a blistering outside shot and Hoover never had a successful offensive possession in the waning minutes of the game.

Auburn head coach Ben Hunt characterized the game as an “ugly win”. “The game was crazy at times. I’m proud of our boys for fighting ‘til the end. We have some tough kids and just when it seemed like things weren’t going our way Joey McGinty made a play to change the game.”

Auburn moves to 7-2 on the year in Greater Birmingham Youth Lacrosse League play and travels to Birmingham on Thursday to take on Briarwood Christian.

The Auburn Lacrosse JV squad was also in action Sunday afternoon, defeating Hoover’s Junior Varsity in sudden-death, 5-4. Crawford Morris, who had two goals on the day, scored the game winner for the Tigers. The game was penalty marred for both teams, with Hoover receiving 8 minutes of non-releasable penalties.
